Liner Notes

Larangan is a Nusantaran cosmological mechanism that binds together customary law, spirituality, and ecological strategy. Human beings, as a small part of the earth’s ecosystem, ought to recognize their limits—the capacity to live alongside all other creatures, and humility before a power far greater than themselves.

Learning from the past, our ancestors left behind places marked as Larangan—the forbidden, the guarded—along with the counsel that each generation keep this trust in collective awareness: to honor what is sacred, and to know that not everything may be touched. But when human beings lose the ability to recognize the sacred—a condition of nirsakralitas—the forbidden no longer appears as forbidden. And a Larangan forgotten or transgressed will demand its consequence: Lara—pain, loss, a wound that spreads from the soil to one another.
