Bandung memiliki sebuah minor music scene yang berkembang pada era 90-an. Saat mereka tergila-gila pada riuhnya musik britpop dan/atau indie rock ala Inggris, sekumpulan anak muda di jalan Purnawarman saat itu memainkan gitarnya dengan suara fals dan kord miring gaya No Wave dengan tak lupa sentuhan keberisikan yang pada akhirnya teridentifikasilah bahwa mereka mengorientasikan telinganya pada gaya khas alternative indie rock ala Amerika. Dari perkembangan minor scene itu, hampir lebih dari sewindu kemudian lahirlah Neowax sebagai revivalist meneruskan perjuangan para pendahulunya.

Setelah melalui beberapa promo CD dan limited handmade EP, akhirnya mereka merilis debutnya pada tahun ini. Pada awalnya band ini mengarahkan musikalitasnya pada indie rockers yang terbilang juga merupakan generasi baru di negeri asalnya seperti Grandaddy. Proses tersebut membuat mereka lebih bijak menyikapi idola-idolanya hingga akhirnya ghost magic treat menjadi treatment yang sangat baik terhadap musikalitas mereka sendiri. Keyword-nya adalah eklektik. Anda bisa menemukan berbagai jenis manuver musikal yang dengan shocking dibalut melalui estetika musik indie rock yang sangat kitschy lengkap dengan karakter lo-fi tanpa menjadi terkesan murahan. Keadaan ini menjadikan tidak validnya tuduhan bertajuk “Sonic Youth-esque” atau “pahlawan kesiangan No Wave” bagi band yang saya juluki sebagai “the-best-indie-rock-band-in-Indonesia” ini. (Gembi)

Bandung has a minor music scene that had been growing since 1990s. When people are head over heels with the nosiness of britpop or britain indie rock, some youngsters in Purnawarman street, at that time, play their guitar with false note and No Wave sloped chord style with a touch of noisiness. Finally, we can identified the orientation of their ears with American alternative indie rock style. From the rise of that minor scene, almost eight years later, Neowax was born as a revivalist, to continue the movement of their scene ancestor.

After passing some promo CD and limited handmade EP, finally they released their debut this year. At first, Neowax was focussed their music to Grandaddy, a new generation of indie rock in America. This process made Neowax more wise in to treat their idols. Finally, Ghost Magic Treat became a very good treatment to their own musicality. The keyword is eclectic. You can find many shocking musical maneuver covered with an aesthetic indie rock music which very kitschy with a lo-fi character, but not sounds cheap. This situation make a judgement like “Sonic Youth-esque” or “No Wave Late-Heroes” become unvalid. I called this band “the-best-indie-rock-band-in-Indonesia”. (Gembi)
